The Best Weekend Getaway to Kentucky Waterfall Country

Locations: London, KY; McKee, KY (Flat Lick Falls); Corbin, KY (Cumberland Falls)

Hello, friends! This was a small weekend getaway trip Jess and I took back in 2017. We actually, also, got engaged on this little trip! So, this was a sweet little memorable weekend getaway 🙂

Our engagement announcement was cute! We stayed at the cutest little cabin near London, KY. It was out in the woods and central to accessing several waterfalls in the area, including Cumberland Falls and the Daniel Boone National Forest. The link for this VRBO is listed below:

Cumberland Falls is always a crowd pleaser. We have both been many times. It is known as the “Niagra of the South.” So many photos have been captured of this huge, beautiful waterfall. So I will share a couple of photos of it and highly recommend a visit to the park… there are many hiking trails and even another falls in the park called Eagle Falls. Great area to take the kiddos as well 🙂

Isn’t she a beauty? It was a perfect summer day to go! If you get close enough you can feel the spray from the falls. Definitely a once in a lifetime experience!
We also traveled to a lesser-known area in McKee, KY. It is called Flat Lick Falls. This little gem is nestled way back in the countryside of Kentucky. It also has several easily accessible hiking trails and loops to take in all of the scenery.

There are also several small caverns within the trail too you can easily walk into. Some are so large it is cooler on the inside! We probably came across 3-4 areas large enough you can walk into. We love little treasures like these on our hiking trips!

There are 2 ways to access the falls. One is by the loop trail. Either direction will take you below and above the falls itself. This was a picture above the falls from the trail. It’s so quaint and peaceful.

This was taken on the loop trail at the base of the falls. The water is fed by a decent sized creek and is clear, clean, and cool. On warmer sunny days, I’d bet people come and swim in the pool of this waterfall and do a little rock climbing/jumping.

A picture of the side of the falls. Had to go a little off trail and rock climbing for this one… but it wasn’t difficult. This waterfall is a lot taller than it appears in the photos and has a beautiful rock ledge cliff to spill over!

You can easily access the top of the falls and walk right up to the ledge, if you want. Here’s me laying down close to the ledge. My mother would always fuss at me doing this kind of thing… she would say “Shew, Sydney, you always make me so nervous with that crap. Get back!” HAHAHA. I don’t really have a fear of heights, so it doesn’t bother me. Clearly, I am not going to fall here 🙂

You can see the water has carved out a small hole within the falls ledge over time. It’s big enough a small kid could fit through it, though I do not recommend that HAHAHA. It’s also a pretty high waterfall without having a very deep pool beneath it, so I don’t recommend taking the plunge from the top of the falls, as you would most certainly break something. Still a nice swim, though, if you choose to safely paddle in the pool below.

The wife and I, enjoying the sounds and views of Flat Lick Falls. This was a fairly easy and leisurely hike on our weekend getaway. We look like babies here compared to now HAHAHA.

When we got back to the cabin, I had a nice little nap in the hammock while Jess made a small fire in the fire pit next to the cabin. If there is a hammock nearby, I am going to be in it 🙂 Make sure if you are in this area to keep up with the latest fire hazard laws as there are times when the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Department will put a fire ban on the area if it is deemed too dangerous at the time. These woods are very dense and will catch fire quick. You can find the map to where these burn bans are here:

It was a quick weekend but one well spent! We enjoyed our time checking out these waterfalls in the area. There are several more around, but we ran out of time to go see them all at the time. Follow along as we do go visit them all!
As always, stay kind and sweet, my busy bees! Ciao!
